Zero Tolerance for Bullying, Harassment, and Disrespectful Behaviour
It is with deep concern that we address a troubling trend within our community. Over recent months, there has been a noticeable increase in rude, condescending, and disrespectful behaviour directed toward our staff. These incidents include bullying, intimidation, and harassment—behaviours that are not only unacceptable but also unlawful. It stems from residents and guests not complying with the rules and regulations.
Our staff, many of whom are young adults gaining their first work experience, deserve to feel safe, respected, and supported in their workplace. No one should be subjected to verbal abuse, threats, or offensive conduct while performing their duties.
The Board of Directors of Lake Summerside is fully committed to protecting our employees from any form of abusive behaviour. We remind all residents and their guests that such conduct is strictly prohibited under both Alberta and Canadian federal legislation:
- The Alberta Human Rights Act prohibits harassment and bullying in the workplace, especially when based on protected grounds such as race, gender, disability, or religion.
- The Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act defines harassment as any unwelcome conduct or comment that causes offence or adversely affects a worker’s health and safety.
- The Canada Labour Code also protects employees from harassment and violence, including any behaviour that could cause psychological or physical harm.
Effective immediately, any resident or guest found engaging in bullying, intimidation, threats, verbal abuse, offensive gestures, or harassment will face serious consequences, including fines and suspension of access to the park and its amenities for up to one year.
We urge all residents to reflect on their interactions and to speak with their fellow community members about the importance of respectful behaviour. Let us work together to ensure that Lake Summerside remains a welcoming and safe environment for everyone—residents, guests, and staff alike.
Thank you for your attention to this serious matter and for your continued support in fostering a respectful community.
Sincerely,
Ryan Devlin
President
Summerside Residents Association
